5 Linkbuilding Tips for SEO Positioning

The Linkbuilding (literally link building) has been and remains very important to give value to your website. It is a strategy of optimizing internal and external links of a web page, with the aim of obtaining a good positioning in the search engines. This strategy is to get important websites that may be related to your page include links to your website, using optimal keywords. Linkbuilding is a very good way to get better positioning in search engines, because your page gets a vote every time another site links to you, offering you more visibility in the search engines. Doing it well requires a good strategy and takes a lot of time and research.

Last April, Google implemented a robot called Google Penguin. This one detects in the pages the links of low quality and with the backlinks of doubtful reputation, the pages on optimized (that is to say with too many links) and the techniques ‘Black hat’ (manipulation of searchers).

Here are some simple tips for you to do a good Linkbuilding:

1. – Create natural links to your page by publishing content as a guest on other pages or inviting others to publish in yours. The best way is choosing pages that have more traffic than yours.

2. – Choose a text for your Anchor Text (the text that you put to the link) original and not repeat.

3. – Publish very interesting content such as videos, blog entries, infographics or presentations in a way that encourages other people to link to their pages, that is, what we call Link Bait .

4. – Look at the links strategies of the competition. Use tools such as Open Site Explorer. With it you get information about the links, the Anchor and the authority where each link is located.

5. – Create a linkbuilding strategy, choosing carefully the pages in which you want to put your links and book a couple of hours a week in your calendar. It is a slow process but with results.

What are the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) and how do they work?

AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) is an Open Source project launched by Google that begins at the end of 2015 in response to Facebook Instant Articles. It was born with the will to show pages with a very low loading time on mobile devices. To achieve this, what he proposes is to offer the most simplified version of the page. An adapted html language (amp html) is used and the resource load is limited. For example:

CSS: only those are online and weighing less than 50 kb can be used

Javascript: AMP only allows javascript to be loaded asynchronously and does not block the representation of the page

It is very easy to detect an AMP result in the SERPs; it is enough to detect those results with the lightning symbol when a search is made on a mobile device.

How AMP works

When SERPs detect AMP results, they are loaded quickly, since the execution of the AMP itself is performed directly on Google servers.

When Google detects a URL with a label that indicates that there is an AMP version, it tracks and validates that the standards are met. Below you can see an example of how Google is told that an AMP page exists.

If the standards are met, Google indicates that the URL has an AMP version. On the other hand, it saves a version of the page in its cache. Thus, when a user performs a search, the search engine loads the content from its own CDN server in a pre-render and when the user hits a hit in one of the results, it shows the content almost immediately.

AMP components

AMP pages are composed of three elements:

AMP HTML:

It is an adapted HTML code that, as we advanced, contains some limitations and particularities. These particularities translate into extensions of the code that include components such as AMP own tags. Below we can see an example of basic AMP HTML that includes what is strictly necessary:

The first thing that can get our attention is the html ϟ that is necessary to specify that it is an html amp code. AMP highlights the fact that tags and components are used different from the usual html.

Examples of tags: amp-img, amp-form, amp-video, amp-pixel, etc. We can find them all here.

It is important to note that AMP is not simply a series of labels that are added to your original HTML page, but it implies a new writing and layout.

AMP JS:

Thanks to the AMP JS library, fast loading of AMP HTML pages is achieved.

This library follows the recommended performance practices of AMP. These have certain limitations when it comes to managing the load of resources and offering those components and specific tags of AMP HTML that we have commented on in the first point.

In relation to the limitations we can highlight some points:

– AMP only allows asynchronous Javascript. Thus, the resources are loaded in parallel to the page’s HTML load, so that these resources do not block the representation of the page.

– The use of safe spaces when including the different elements of the page. That is, each element must have a predetermined space, since design re-calculations are not made once the different resources are loaded, so everything that is loaded must already have dimensions (a space) associated.

– Slow CSS selectors are disabled.

– Only one CSS in line with a weight less than 50kb is allowed. On the other hand, statements such as: !mportant are disabled.

AMP cache:

As we progressed, Google saves a version of the AMP pages in the cache and loads the content of the pages from its own server, when the search results are loaded. At this point, the pages are validated to ensure their operation and to ensure that their load does not depend on external resources that may block it.

AMP, just for news?

At the beginning it seems that the pages that have AMP are related to news, news carousel or editorial content. But AMP was created to be implemented in e-commerce. In fact there are early adopters of the project like eBay or Airbnb that show their results in this way:

What should we keep in mind when implementing MPAs?

In the case of Airbnb, the company took into account 4 factors when deciding whether to implement AMP and in which pages of its website. These factors were:

  • The impact of traffic (if AMP brings quality traffic or not)
  • Volatility of the page (constant changes / updates every X minutes)
  • The technical challenges that implementation may involve
  • The ownership of the page (if you have control over it or not)

Implement it throughout the website?

In pages that present technical challenges and are going to be updated very frequently, it may be inadvisable (in Airbnb they decided not to implement AMP in their Home page for that reason). What they decided to do was to test it in the search result pages of its interface, since it had a sufficient traffic source to detect a relevant change in case AMP was effective and the changes would not be as disruptive as in the Home.

It is important to set criteria and guidelines to follow. It is also convenient to test the operation in some pages or sections of the web before implementing it throughout the site (especially if the site is large).

We must create an MVP: Minimum viable product. When creating our MVP we must take into account several factors:

  • How AMP will behave in relation to the design of our website
  • How it will affect the workflow of the company’s developers
  • How AMP will affect the user experience (and the product)

How to detect and validate an AMP page

There are several ways to validate our AMP pages; here I will add the 3 main ones:

Console for developers: the AMP page is opened, “# development = 1” is added to the end of the URL and the console is opened (in mac: command + alt + J) to see the validation errors:

From the validator’s website: https://validator.ampproject.org/

Using the browser extension: during navigation, the page is automatically validated by displaying different colors depending on the state. (Here you will find the extension for Chrome)

We must bear in mind the importance of the performance of our websites on mobile devices. Taking into account that since 2016 more than half of the queries received by the main search engines come from these devices, it is crucial to optimize them to offer the user the best possible experience. For this reason, it is important to keep up to date on the latest news about AMP. Read us and do not miss anything!

Solutions and alternatives to Google Keyword Planner

It is no longer a mystery what happened a few weeks ago in one of the tools Google who liked to SEO’s … Dear Google Keyword Planner , also known as “Keyword Planner of Google” has stopped showing volumes for exact keywords and now you can only see a very wide range of the volume of a keyword. I emphasize on this because a range of 10k – 100k makes a huge difference … I mean, Google, are you telling me that “wedding dresses” can have 10,000 searches a month or 100,000?

Let’s see, I understand that Google is a private company, and that now they want to offer accurate information only to advertisers who are investing their money in it with their Adwords campaigns. But the first time I’ve found my reaction has not been the most comprehensive…

Solution to the limitation of the Keyword Planner

I think the first thing that we have all done, has been to go to Google search solutions / remedies / tricks, to get back the exact search volumes. The only thing that I have found in several reference websites in the United States has been the following method:

Step 1:

Add to the plan all the keywords of our interest and click on the button “Review plan”

Step 2:

What we will see next is a screen like the following one, where we will have to introduce a quite high bid, select the “Keyword” tab and select an exact match type.

Step 3:

Now, you can see how many times each word is printed, a figure that corresponds well to the desired search volume that we are looking for.

Even so I am not satisfied; I still miss knowing the seasonality of the keywords and, therefore, the distribution of that volume throughout the year.

Let’s say that this solution has not just been comfortable for me in a research and analysis of keywords, so then, I bring you the best free and paid tools, to make an exhaustive keywords analysis for our online projects.

2 free alternative tools to the Keyword Planner

Finding completely free tools that offer something similar to what the Keyword Planner gave us has been an odyssey … But here I present 2 tools that return the search volume of any keyword , being able to make all the requests you want without limitations during all the day.

 Serps.com

This tool offers, among other features, the “Keyword research” tool that allows you to search for a keyword and returns a good list of keywords related to the corresponding average search volume.

You can sort by volume, filter keywords and add them to a list that you can download with a simple click.

The best thing is that it is a free tool that you can also use without having to register.

As “against” you can not select the country and the reference language, so we have to understand that data as representative and not entirely accurate.

Wordze.com

To use Wordze, you will have to create an account, but it offers you much more information than the tools we have just seen and also allows you to select the country and language for your keywords.

Among the functionalities that I appreciate most is the possibility of seeing the seasonality of each keyword and, therefore, see the search volume distributed throughout the months of the year.

To see everything that this tool offers, I suggest you take a look at this presentation video:

As “against” it has to be a very slow tool to load when you are doing any search and that, in addition, although it shows you the volume of each month of the year, it is not a data that you can export (just as you could do with the Google Keyword Planner).

The best payment tools to search for keywords

Many of the tools that I show you below have, in addition to the function of searching for keywords, also other very interesting functionalities and sometimes essential for any SEO. Therefore, although the word “payment” may scare a little, you have to think that paying only one of these tools you will also have access to many more important data for the organic positioning of your project.

There are many, many payment tools to search for keywords that I have found in the research and analysis that you find in this article, but I’ll only present you the best ones so that you invest your money in tools that are truly worthwhile.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an essential tool for the analysis of backlinks both your website and all your competitors, but also offers the “Keyword Explorer” which, in addition to showing the volume of keywords, also provides other valuable data such as keyword difficulty (the difficulty to position each word), the CPC, the number of results in Google and the number of words that make up each keyword. And, best of all, you can set up advanced filters to show you what interests you the most.

 Semrush

Semrush is THE tool that all SEO must consult for multiple functionalities. Regarding our subject matter with keywords, Semrush provides the valuable ” Keyword Analytics ” that shows both phrase matching and related keywords, as well as offering very useful data such as keyword difficulty, the number of results for each keyword.

If you do not have an account in Semrush, you can try it for free for two months and if you want to know a little more about this tool I recommend reading this article.

Kw Finder

Now, we are talking about a tool that is highly focused on the task of searching for keywords: KwFinder. Very usable and with a simple and functional design, this tool provides many essential and complete data that you can add to a list of favorites or export in CSV.

One of the most interesting features for which it stands out, in comparison to the two previous tools, is that it allows you to import keywords: fundamental when you want to upload a file or simply paste a list of words that you have found using the complementary tools (I will present you more ahead) and you need to know the search volumes.

KwFinder has a free version that lets you perform 2 searches daily for unregistered users and 5 for those who created an account, giving you the possibility to try it before buying it.

Keywordtool.io

There are many “fans” of this tool, and I also include it in my favorites list, although I find it a bit expensive for the data it offers: search volume (and its trend throughout the year), CPC and competition in Adwords (these last two data you already know you can get them for free through the Google Keyword Planner …).

Still, it is a tool worth mentioning because it offers a list of keywords much wider than the previous ones and, in this, it is almost insurmountable!

To know keywordtool.io I recommend reading this post on Dean Romero’s blog.

Complementary keyword search tools

To conclude this post, I’m going to tell you about the many tools that exist as a complement to a keyword research work and I’ll reveal the best … Ready?

All the tools you will find below do not return search volumes and fulfill the same simple function: concatenate the keyword searched with all the letters of the alphabet , numbers and (some) with prefixes and suffixes to return all the keywords in mid and long tail:

·        Keywordtool.io (in its free version)

·        Keyword.io

·        Ubersuggest.io

·        Keyword Shitter (version 2 of this tool has just come out and now allows you to include prefixes and suffixes such as: “who, what, where, when, why, how, with, without, close … and a long etcetera!)

·        Hypersuggest (offers the same as Keyword Shitter 2)

and … the wonderful Answer the Public that, as you may have understood, is my favorite

Why? Because it not only works like the ones I just presented you for searching for mid and long tail, but also uses google’s suggestions to find the questions that users ask in the search engine . I better show you an example…

For our keyword “wedding dresses” the tool has taken 694 keywords that contain the exact word between: letters of the alphabet, prepositions and questions.

SEO Tips to Make Good Web Structure of Your Site

Is web structure so important for SEO positioning? During the course of this post you will discover why it is important, not only for the search engines, but also for the user experience that, after all, is the most relevant for our brand.

Know our market

As a good SEO project, the first thing we have to know is what the market demands from us. And is that without knowing what the user demands us, how can we meet their needs? The best method to know what our potential users request is through an exhaustive Keyword Research.

For this there are different tools that can help us make the perfect Keyword Research to get the most out of our web structure. The most popular and best known is the Google Keyword Planner, through which we have the possibility to segment the data by country, languages, for the different months of the year to know its seasonality, etc. On the other hand, as we explained above, there are different alternative tools to the Keyword Planner so as not to fail in our web structure.

What should be taken into account to carry out a correct web structure?

Once we know what our potential users demand and how, we can start to dedicate our time to think about the best strategy to make the best web structure of our site . For this, there are different factors to consider:

Intuitive and easy

The first step for a web structure to be efficient for the user and for crawlers is to make it intuitive and easy to navigate. For this you have to know our product well and know how we are going to offer it to our user. After all, what we want is that our user does not have to think if clicking on that link will go to the desired page, but on the contrary, you have to be sure, almost without thinking, that this link leads to your wish.

Few clicks per user

It is really important that, no matter how big our web page is, a user can reach any level of that site in just 3 clicks, at most 4. This is a key factor so that the user is not navigating for a long time to reach their destination and it is also important for the search engines to “crawl” the entire site in the shortest time possible and in an orderly manner.

Different categories

We recommend, before starting the construction of our site, to plan our products in different categories. The more segmented, the better, since the user will have the contents exposed in a more visual way and where it will be easier to reach their destination in a much faster way, offering a better experience.

For this reason, and with the previously carried out Keyword Research, we will be able to know the different keywords for each one of our categories and thus satisfy the needs of the users in a precise way.

Duplicate content

However, we must bear in mind that, for many categories that we have, these have to be unique and relevant. However segmented we want to have our products, it is not advisable to have pages that contain similar products because, in this way, we will be offering duplicate content, both for the user and for the crawlers.

Other important features to consider

Relevant content

Not only the duplication of content is important, having pages with irrelevant content makes the quality of our site less. That is why we have to cover our pages with content that really adds relevance to our users and who, in this way, decide to consume our products.

Internal linking

Taking advantage of the aforementioned relevant content, it is time to add an internal link that will favor the user’s experience (showing similar or complementary products to the one we are exposing) and the crawler (providing greater notoriety in those links that we consider most important).

Unique URLs

At this point we focus on improving the “experience of the crawlers” since each of our URLs contains a different product and that is why we want the crawlers to have the “biggest idea” of the content of the page. To select each of the URLs we must take into account the main keyword of the page, previously extracted from the Keyword Research.

Mobile Friendly

Something obvious, but still not given the importance it requires. More than 60% of Google searches are done from mobile devices. That is why we have to adapt our sites to the smallest devices and take into account also if we believe that our pages are AMP or WPA (If you still know what these terms mean, you can know what is the AMP or what are the PWA by clicking on the links).

WPO: https and site speed

To conclude, we must dedicate a small section to our beloved WPO. It is vital to have a website with the https protocol since, as of July, these pages will be shown as unsafe places to navigate , in addition to indirectly affecting our positioning in the SERPS.

And what about the speed of our website? It is useless to have the best web structure if a user is not able to reach any point of the web in a few seconds. Every tenth of a second counts, and not only for the user’s experience, but also for the positioning of our site in the SERPS.

So here are some tips for before, during and after making a web structure. As an online marketing agency, we are dedicated to making the most of all the opportunities offered by the search engines so that our projects obtain the greatest possible visibility. Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Investing Affordable SEO Services

Are you investing in low-cost SEO services? Don’t fall in the trap of affordable SEO companies that may bring havoc to your business.

Bear in mind that the lower the price of these SEO companies, the lesser quality, the lesser experts and the lesser services they can do. Would you dare to put your business at risk?

Check out the reasons why you shouldn’t invest in low-budget SEO companies:

1. You can do little with minimum investment.

If you have little budget on SEO, you cannot maximize the earnings of your business. A low-budget SEO can only do activities that are time-dependent. These SEO activities include page-level optimization, keyword research, and a few technical optimization.
A developer is needed for you to maximize the technical optimization, and hiring a developer is added cost. This limitation could affect how you drive organic traffic.

You should also know that that content creation and backlinks are the biggest factors to grow your business online. Both of these needs capital. Without much capital online, your business could not explore the benefits that you should be getting. A low investment could result in poor content creation and the utilization of gray or black backlinks that could place your business in trouble.

2. You lose bigger after investing in a cheap SEO.

Although you could save some without investing a lot in SEO, you’ll end up spending more in the long run. There are things that you could save on business, but SEO should not be included.
In the beginning, you would not realize how a low-cost SEO could hurt your business. It is because it would take a few months before the effects would be visible. Obviously, a bad SEO would penalize your business.

When this happens, you need to hire a company that will help you get rid of the penalty. Moreover, the traffic that you had could not be recovered anymore. In the long run, you end up wasting time, money and effort to something that would not last.

3. You won’t gain tangible assets.

When you invest little in SEO, you will not gain tangible assets, such s quality content and backlinks. These assets are the ones that will make your business thrive in the online business. Since you don’t have enough capital, you will not get great content and backlinks.

4. You won’t get the work of the experts.

When you get the services of companies that offer affordable SEO services, you get the services of SEO staff who have less experience. Good SEO companies are costly because they hire experienced and skillful SEO experts.

These people have good SEO backgrounds and are knowledgeable on their crafts. Skill and a combination of tested system and strategies are what you need to get sufficient SEO results.

5. You get low quality SEO results that work for a long time.
If you’re thinking that an affordable SEO can take your business further, you’re committing a big mistake. Companies that offer low-cost SEO use cookie-cutter techniques that don’t work and are poor quality.
Moreover, hiring cheap SEO companies offer limited communication and after sales services. It is because they care so much only in the front-end sales.
Good companies do follow-up to check your status. They value their customers by not stopping at providing services, but extending their services after the work. They value the results and are keen in the retention of their clients.

Starting Off In The Right Direction Is The Best Way To Ensure Your Web Success

Making cash on the internet is not as hard as many people believe and you are going to find that there’s a lot of different ways that you could go about generating an income on the internet. Network marketing and advertising and affiliate marketing and advertising are two of the most common ways that men and women use for producing a full time living, or at least part time. The reason these two methods are quite popular is simply because you are able to typically get going with very little money initially.  The benefits of SEO Marketing are huge if one decides to take advantage of them.

When you sell somebody else’s service or product, you earn money as an affiliate, which is the simple definition of affiliate advertising. This isn’t something where you actually have to go straight into a hard sell, actually all you genuinely have to do is send people to a particular web site. Affiliate marketers are provided with a unique link that they send traffic to and by utilizing this link all sales which are generated will be tracked to you. With regards to Network Advertising and marketing you’re going to discover that this is much more of a multilevel marketing program even though you still get paid for any sales you produce. You are building an organization with network marketing, making it different from affiliate marketing, because you are building a down line, every time you sign up another person in your business.

What makes this a wonderful way to make cash, is you not only get commissions on what you sell, but also on what everyone under you sells as well. Another good thing about Network Marketing is that the folks in your down line will be helping to build your business every time they bring somebody in as well. This is really a good way to build an enormous down line simply because everybody will be working together to help you with this. Needless to say whether you are using Network Marketing or affiliate marketing and advertising you are going to see that driving individuals to your website to be able to get them to sign up will be your number one priority. And in relation to driving this traffic to your website you’re going to find that there are lots of different approaches folks take to be able to achieve this.

You have to learn which method of producing traffic is best for you and you need one that you like, and can afford, which you are able to learn everything about. Of course after you master one kind of marketing, you are able to then begin to use another kind of marketing in order to start producing even more traffic. If you are only using one type of advertising and marketing you’re going to see that if this advertising and marketing starts not to work, you’ll no longer be pulling and traffic to your sites, so multiple ways of driving traffic is essential. Before you add on new kinds of traffic generating techniques it is vitally important that you comprehend and are effective with the previous ways of marketing and advertising you have been using.  Organic search engine optimization is one of the best ways to generate free traffic to your business.  Unfortunately many people do not see the value in using this to maximum potential.

You will never get rich with only one way to generate traffic, or only selling one product. Something else you should understand is that not everyone you send to an internet site is going to purchase something, which is the reason why you’ll need a huge amount of traffic. Obviously when you find something that winds up being profitable this is something you need to continue to do again and again.

Do you at all need to Outsource Search Engine Optimization?

If you thought that adding Meta tags was all that SEO companies did and that you can easily manage it yourself, you need to revise your assumptions. SEO has evolved today into an art and a science and only an expert can help your business harness the true potential of Internet. Page optimization, navigation optimization, code optimization, link building, site analytics are all complex activities which demand resources (read time and hands) and SEO expertise. The ROI of your marketing plan and budget increases manifolds when you Outsource Search Engine Optimization Offshore. Here are a few benefits that the organizations that offshore SEO across the world vouch.

Why Outsource your SEO?

  • Concentrate on other core activities.

Does your company shoot its own TV commercial and buy advertising slots? No! because you need to focus on your core activities. Your marketing and sales team need to spend more time in closing deals.

The nitty-gritty’s of Search Engine Optimization can be outsourced. Activities like site management, regular optimization and link building are a big drain on your time and resources.

  • Increase profits- Save on your costs.

Every extra penny spent reduces your profit margin. This is even more apt when an organization is small. Outsource SEO to SEO experts located in offshore sites like USA. You get quality at an affordable price. It’s a win-win proposition.

  • Do what you are great at and let the Experts do the rest.

If you are not great at SEO, don’t spend time learning it. Instead outsource SEO to companies good at it. Besides the searching and indexing algorithms are dynamic and you need SEO experts who can control these indexing algorithms.

  • Search Engine Optimization- not a one time Job.

Optimizing your site needs regular efforts. You might achieve high rankings once, but the work doesn’t stop there. Maintaining your position on the search engine is a much bigger challenge. Some SEO activities (like link building and page optimization) are recurring in nature and the results of these activities are directly proportional to the effort put in. You need to outsource these tasks to more economical locations to get the maximum for every dollar spent.

How to select your Offshore SEO Partner?

Once you have decided to optimize your website for the search engines you must consider the following pertinent issue before taking the next step:

Who is the right Offshore Search Engine Optimization partner for you? This involves a thorough evaluation of SEO companies/ consultants.

There are a number of SEO consultants out there who claim to give number one ranking or instant top results in all the major search engines and their communication has the following flavor “guaranteed Top rank in 2 weeks” but think twice before choosing your Offshore SEO partner.

Many feel that simply identifying and putting the keywords into the HTML tags is the only task that an SEO company needs to do. But a real SEO partner needs to do much more.

The steps to evaluate your Offshore Search Engine Optimization Partner comprises of:

  1. Skill and competence evaluation, which includes:

  • Research Capability: Are they able to identify your target audience and henceforth the keywords they will be looking for? What tools or practices will they use for identifying keywords?
  • Search Engine Awareness: Which all search engines are they considering during SEO? Make sure they optimize your website keeping in mind the most commonly used search engines and not the smaller search engines.
  • Link Building Skills: How will they take care of links? Make sure they don’t go for building link farms just for the sake of giving links on your site.
  • Inorganic SEO Skills: Are they planning to optimize your website for paid inclusions (like PPC) as well? If yes, how well can they manage these?
  • Competition Research and analysis: How will my site do with respect to my competitors after SEO? Will the SEO consultants also take into consideration the practices adopted by your competitors who have higher ranking in search engine results?
  • Fair Play: What all care do they take while doing SEO? E.g. do they make use of doorway pages for getting top ranking, as the sites using such pages will be banned, once they are identified by the search engines.
  • Learning organization: How frequent is their updation of SEO practices? Is it in compliance with the frequency with which search engines change their algorithms?
  1. Business Compatibility evaluation, which includes:

  • Flexibility and Ownership: Is your SEO partner willing to take the responsibility of the initiative? Is the partner flexible and willing to understand your business issues?
  • Market Knowledge: Does the partner understand the cultural issues of your market and target audience? Does the partner have experience and presence in your market/ country?
  • Infrastructure and Resources: Does your SEO partner have the requisite resource and the desired infrastructure required to execute your plan?

Your website’s success finally depends on your website optimization which in turn depends on your making the correct choice of your Offshore SEO partner. So instead of jumping to conclusions on meeting the first SEO consultant or company around, first evaluate them.

What is Search Engine? How Search Engine Works?

Search Engines

Imagine yourself in a library without the librarian. How would you get to that book you were looking for all this while? It’s practically impossible. Search engines, like the librarians, index the websites on the World Wide Web and store thousands of web pages in their database and present a list of web sites based on the word/words, known as “keywords”, typed in by the user. The major search engines today are Google, MSN Search, AltaVista, AOL Search and All The Web. These search engines make your search for the right site or content much easier and quicker.

The Crawling Process:

Search engines make use of a software program called “spider” or “robot” which “crawls”- parses through the text of thousands of web pages across the web to give the results. Robots read through the text in order to verify the relevancy, reliability and importance of the content of web pages, index them and store them in their database. Search engine robots can’t read through graphics, frames, flash or similar other technology. The process by which the search engines read and store the web pages in their database is known as the “crawling” process. Crawlers move on from one web page, mostly starting with the home page, to other pages through the links provided on the previously crawled web page. Robots start their search with directories which are websites having a large number of links to different websites categorized under different categories by human editors. Hence, sites that don’t have any inbound links or not listed in any of the directories are not crawled by the robots.

Indexing Algorithm:

The different parameters on the basis of which the web pages are indexed is called the “indexing algorithm”. Crawlers crawl the web pages using this algorithm. One such indexing algorithm PageRank™ is used by Google. These algorithms take care of different criteria like the title of web page, the use of keywords in the title as well the way they are being used in the content, the relevancy of the content related to the keyword typed in, how many sites link to that website and many such other parameters while giving the results. Different search engines have different indexing algorithms and hence, give different results for the same keyword.

The spiders crawl a website periodically and do note the changes made in any of the pages. Even while giving results search engines give importance to those sites, which update themselves frequently. There’s an optional tag called “Revisit tag” that can be used to specify the time period after which the search engines should crawl your page provided you update your content within the specified time period. It may seriously affect your search engine rankings if the robot revisits your site based on the revisit tag but still finds the old content. Spiders update their index on finding an updated web page though the index updation may not occur as soon as the updated web page is crawled.

Managing the spider:

The information regarding which of your pages should be indexed by the robot and which shouldn’t be indexed can be provided within the Robots Meta tag, a special Meta tag placed within the head section. In addition to this, the links on a web page that a robot should or shouldn’t follow can also be specified within this tag.

Through the file named “Robots.txt”, written in any text editor, we can control which portions of the web page should be crawled by the robot and which portions shouldn’t be crawled. You can also specify the robots that should crawl your website since a robot on visiting a site first of all reads this file. You can also prevent a specific search engine from crawling your site using this. Thus this file works as a firewall between your website and the different search engine robots.

Thus search engines basically use different programs to find, index and list out the web sites available on the World Wide Web.
